Senathipathi (b. 1939)
M. Senathipathi was born in Chennai and received his Diploma in Drawing and
Painting from the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Chennai, in 1965. In
1988 he received a British Council grant to travel to London, France, Holland,
Belgium and West Germany.
Drawing on the imagery and oral tradition of the epic stories, fables and
Hindu mythologies related to him as a child, Senathipathi developed his highly
impressionable and distinctive style and content. Senathipathi’s art is one built on
fluid, lyrical line, brilliant and wisely-choreographed colour and dense pattern. He
recalls his fascination with the colourful pictures and icons in his parents’ prayer
room. A founding member of the Cholamandal Artists’ Village, style is no doubt
inspired in part by his early teachers, K.C.S. Paniker.
The artist lives and works in Chennai.
