Surekha completed her diploma in Painting from the Ken School of Arts, Bangalore
in 1990, and her MFA in Painting from Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan in 1992. She was
also Artist-in-Residence, at the Aarau, Switzerland in 1999.
In paintings, photographs or works which involve the ‘needle and thread’, Surekha
manages to embody new trends that helps her work interact with the viewer.
She has a number of shows to her credit, including Unclaimed – urban f(r)ictions,
Samuha, Bengaluru, Chancery Lane Gallery, Hong Kong; Costumes d’enfants,
miroir des grands, Guimet Museum, Paris; Young Artist Bukarest Biennale, Rumania,
2010; Flames, Flowers and Other Images, sculpture, photo and video installation,
Chemould Prescott Road, Mumbai, 2007 and Communing with Urban Heroines,
photo and video installation, Max MuellerBhavan, Bengaluru; Jehangir Art Gallery,
Mumbai, 1993; Crimson Art Gallery, Bangalore, 1996; Sista’s Art Gallery, Kalayatra,
Bangalore 1997 and Rathaus, Aarau, Switzerland, 1999. She has also participated
in various group shows, prominent among these being Ken-90, Bangalore, 1990;
‘Women Artists-94’, Hyderabad, 1994 and ‘Edge of the Century’, New Delhi,
Surekha lives and works in Bangalore.
