In any city there is always a ‘hang out’ for artists. Café’ de la Regence & Café’ Guerbois in Paris, Triveni Café in Delhi, College Street Coffee House in Kolkata, Prithvi Theatre Complex and Samovar Garden Café in Mumbai are a few of these. These ‘Hang Outs’ promote and nurture ideas across various media.
Great schools of thoughts and art movements have taken birth at these places. Communism, Existentialism, Impressionism, Expressionism are all products of these Art houses. These meeting places are hotbeds of active discussions, debates and altercations, all of them culminating in the crystallization of ideas that change the world.
Art & Soul similarly rings in a space that bridges the elite & the hoi polloi; the urban & the rural; the classical & the folk. It aims at linking the established & the non-established; the renowned & the upcoming.
The gallery is promoted by hotelier Nina Reddy and actor / filmmaker Shylaja Chetlur with zealous enthusiasm.
The gallery, within its first year of existence, has made a strong presence in the art circles of Chennai with several interesting exhibitions featuring senior artists and promising newer talents. The shows have all been talks-of-the-town having interesting personalities inaugurating them and receiving good media coverage.
Art & Soul has co ordinated a sculpture contest to design the Qube Award in 9th Chennai International Film Festival. A retrospective of Padmashri. Dr.Thotta Tharani’s works was a prestigious happening in the gallery recently. ‘Namma Chennai’ ‘Gestural Figuration’ ‘Expressions’, ‘Veterans’, ‘Foregrounding the Background’, ‘Human Canvas’ are some of the shows hosted by the gallery.
Art & Soul Art Sandhai on ECR, a confluence of artists and their art works in a village ‘mela’ style is a first of its kind initiative to the city of Chennai. Apart from hosting a variety of shows, the gallery is noted for its innovative presentations of these shows that brings together creative artists from various art forms & sociocultural milieus.
